Leading-edge Care For Parkinson’s Patients
Thanks to donors, deep brain stimulation technology is now available at TMH and will provide advanced, innovative treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Empowering Patients Through Tech
The Friends Foundation allocated $20,000 towards digital health technologies (DHTs) research that aims to improve early detection, disease management, and quality of life for people with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s Disease.
The impact of this additional funding is immense – for patients, clinicians, the Parkinson’s community, and (we hope) the health care system in NB. DHTs allow for continuous, real-time tracking of Parkinson’s symptoms, providing clinicians with accurate data to detect changes early and adjust treatments more quickly. This can lead to better patient outcomes and an improved quality of life.
Additionally, mobile apps for Parkison’s patients can track symptoms, medication, mood, exercise, and sleep—helping patients take an active role in their care and improve adherence to treatment plans. By encouraging more proactive disease management, these tools could slow disease progression.
We see this project as a pathway for using DHTs in The Moncton Hospital’s neurology clinics (e.g., for multiple sclerosis, stroke, and neuro-rehab) and for other research projects and clinical programs within Horizon, and across New Brunswick.
