Relaxation Area for Cancer Patients

Donor-Funded Oncology Sunroom and Garden Space Provides Relaxation Area for Cancer Patients

The donor-funded sunroom and garden space on the 31-bed Oncology Inpatient Unit was opened to patients and families in 2024.

This area has been transformed into a bright, hope-inspiring space for patients to relax and heal while fostering wellness in a homelike environment.

The first patient who had a chance to sit in the sunroom expressed how grateful he was to be able to have peace, quiet and time to reflect outside of his hospital room.

“It’s like being in a hotel. You can just sit and relax between treatments,” says 79-year-old Lucien Vautour of Neguac. Oncology Unit Nurse Manager Laura Booth says this area is a welcome addition for cancer patients, many of whom spend weeks or months here.

“It’s like having a space they can call home, where they can feel that they aren’t in the hospital for a while. A lot of times, patients just want to get a breath of fresh air and this space enables that.”

The space has large windows with a panoramic view of the city. It is also wheelchair accessible. Over 2000 donors contributed to this $1 million project and we are bursting with pride!

A special mention to two significant donors: East Coast Oral Surgery, and Doug and Gloria MacDonald Family Foundation.

Thank you to all who contributed to making this happen.

“When you are healthy, you don’t think about a place like this, but when you are sick you really appreciate it.”

Lucien Vautour, Cancer Patient
