Ji Hyang Ryu holding artwork

Ji Hyang Ryu

Companion Level $10,000 - $24,999

Ji Hyang Ryu is a visual artist hailing from Busan, South Korea. She holds a microbiology degree from Pukyung National University but has always been passionate about art. After relocating to Canada and starting a family, Ji pursued her love for art full-time.

Ji specializes in creating artwork inspired by traditional Korean themes, incorporating symbols and animals into her pieces. Notably, she is a two-time provincial art battle champion in the years 2022 and 2023, earning her a spot in the national championship.

Currently based in Riverview, New Brunswick, Ji teaches drawing and painting at her studio, sharing her artistic expertise with her community. She is an active member of various art organizations, including CARFAC Maritimes, the Moncton Art Society, and the Riverview Art Council.

Ji’s artwork has garnered attention from the Canada Art Council and been featured in media outlets like Global News and CBC Halifax.

The artwork that donors receive at the Companion Level was created by Ji, and features a blue lobster, which symbolizes the unique beauty of the Maritime East Coast of Canada. Blue lobsters are incredibly rare, and to Ji, they represent resilience, rarity, and the natural wonders of our region. She created this piece to celebrate that sense of place and identity.
